Vision
  • To enrich the young minds with scientific temper, ethical responsibilities and professional values for contributing to society.
Mission
  • To instill a spirit of scientific temper and to impart quality education in Physics for developing globally competent, socially responsible and value driven citizens committed to sustainable development.
History of the Department
  • Department of Physics is one of the vibrant science departments established in the year 1962 to offer Physics as a subject for the Pre University Course. In continuation, Ancillary Physics was introduced in the year 1963 for the UG Mathematics Program. B.Sc Physics Programme with allied courses: Mathematics and Applied Electronics & Instrumentation commenced in the year 1984 with 22 students. At present, there are seven faculty members, two laboratory assistants and the number of students in the department is 98. Our alumnae are placed in premier institutions and organizations of National importance like NIT, Anna University, Indian Institute of Astro Physics, Adyar Cancer Institute and top rated colleges.
Highlights
  • The department has three spacious class rooms and two well-equipped laboratories.
  • The departmental library is equipped with journals, books and e-books.
  • The students are motivated not only to acquire academic excellence and research attitude but also to engage themselves in social participation. On the whole, the students enjoy the progressive developments in academic, research and social domains.
  • The department successfully installed Off-grid solar systems funded by DBT Star College Scheme that produce 250 watts of electricity during the day time in S.A.S. building. The electricity is stored in the batteries and supplied to M.Sc. Physics laboratory for lighting purpose.
  • The department conducts a good number of National/Regional Conferences funded by UGC and a good number of guest lecture programs under Autonomy grant.
  • Our Department conducts “PHYSICA” Interdepartmental Science Competitions every year since 1998.
  • An endowment named T.Chellappa – Ponnammal cash award is instituted by Mrs.K.Ponnammal, M. Sc., M.Phil., Former Head of the Department, for the two best outgoing students based on their overall achievement.
  • The students of the department regularly appear for “National Graduate Physics Examination” organized by Indian Association of Physics Teachers since 1998. Every year the students attain high grade in the assessment examination.
  • In order to provide work experience to the students, Internship/ Field Project is offered in the curriculum. II B.Sc. students undertake training in reputed organizations like Transtech Tronic Systems, Madurai, JKM Solrod Entech private Ltd, Kovilpatti and Sri Kaliswari Metal Powders Private Ltd, Sivakasi.
  • Faculty and students successfully complete online courses in various platforms like NPTEL, Coursera, Udemy etc.,
  • The department received an amount of Rs. 19, 00,000 under DBT Star College Scheme.
  • The department has solar site which includes a solar panel, solar water heater, solar dryer and solar cooker.

Faculty Achievements

  • All the faculty members hold Ph.D. degree in Physics.
  • They involve themselves in research activities. Their fields of research include Nano technology, Solid State Physics, Crystallography, Solar Thermal Technology, Thin films, Astro Physics and spectroscopy, Polymer electrolyte and Smart materials.
  • Five of our Staff members received funds from UGC for minor research projects and they were successfully carried out.
  • All the faculty members are life members in various professional societies like

  • Faculty members publish their research work in various reputed National/International Journals periodically. They also present their research works in National and International Conferences.
  • Dr. A. Azhagu Parvathi, Head & Associate Professor of Physics conducted coaching classes for NTSE and IIT aspirants. She serves as the ISO co-ordinator for the college. She is also the Dean of Science for the college. She is also a doctoral committee member in SRNM college, Sattur.
  • Dr.S.Thenmozhi published a book on Advance in Biophysics.
  • Dr.R.Hepzi Pramila Devamani is a reviewer in various journals namely Nano Biomedicine and Engineering, International Research Journal of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Asian Plant Research Journal and Elixir International Journals, Journal of Advances in Medicine and Medical Research, Journal of Pharmaceutical Research International, European Journal of Medicinal Plants, Asian Journal of Chemical Sciences, Asian Journal of Medicine and Health. She is also a doctoral committee member in our college and SRNM College, Sattur.
  • Dr.I.Rathinamala undertakes coaching classes for NTSE (School of Excellence). She is a member in board of studies at V.H.N.Senthikumara Nadar College, Virudhunagar (Alumnae). She also received a grant Rs.7,500/- from Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (Student Project Scheme).
  • Dr.M.Sankareswari received Best E-Poster award in Indo-USA International Conference on Applications of Nanotechnology in Biology, Biotechnology, and Biopharmaceutics (ICNB3) held on 11.08.2022 at School of Life Sciences, B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science & Technology, Chennai.
  • Dr.G.Shanmuga Priya received Asia Jothi Award for her essays in Tamil. The award was given by Tamil Literary Association, Kottaram.
  • Dr.R.Hemalatha received a grant Rs.15,000/- from Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (Student Project Scheme).

Academic Enterprises

  • Organized an Outreach Activity on “Experimental Physics” to the Higher Secondary School students in and around Virudhunagar.
  • Organized a Workshop on “Utilization of Renewable Energy Gadgets” for the rural people.
  • Organized Interschool Competitions and Science Exhibition related to World Space Week Celebration on “Space and Sustainability”.
  • Organized a Regional Seminar on “Recent Trends in Nanophysics”.
  • Organized an Awareness Programme on “Benefits of Solar Technology” and Life Skill Programme on “Beware of Social Media” and “Leadership Excellence”.
  • Inter-Departmental and Departmental competitions were conducted in connection with National Science Day Celebration.
  • Organized a Training Programmes on “Efficient Usage of Energy resources” and “Radioactive Waste Management” for Laboratory Staff.
  • Organized a Training programme on “Preparation for JAM Examinations in Physics” for the students of Physics of V.V.Vanniaperumal College for Women, Virudhunagar and neighbouring colleges.
  • Field trip to Tuticorin Thermal Power Plant for I B.Sc. students.
  • Organized Faculty Development Program - Workshop on “Microprocessor and Microcontroller Interfacing Based Projects”.
  • Organized Hands on Training Programmes on “Materials Characterization” and “Arduino UNO” for UG Physics.
  • Organized Faculty Development Programme “Hands on Practice: Interfacing Sensors with Arduino” for the Staff members of various Departments.
  • Organized Guest Lectures on “Necessity for Renewable Energy in Present Scenario in our Nation” and “Recent trends on conducting Polymers Based Composites in Biosensor Applications”.
  • Projects were done by students on various fields like Nanotechnology, Arduino and Solar thermal and PV systems.

  • Our students brought laurels to the Department by enthusiastically participating in State Level Inter Collegiate/Cluster College Meet and also won many prizes in various competitions such as Paper Presentation, Rangoli, Model Display, Quiz, Problem Solving, Dumb Charade, Ad-Act, and Pantomime conducted at the colleges in and around Virudhunagar and Madurai District.
  • Students have completed 65 projects in their respective field over the past three years.
  • They presented their project work in workshops and conferences.
